Hi again wxl, (Ø?) thanks for the suggestion.
I tried to launc2h alsamixer -a basic, but nothing. I reinstalled 
alsa-utils and libasound2 and tried again; and got much the same as you. 
Somehow I don`t get alsamixer or sound at all though. How do you
troubleshoot for this?

alsamixer -a basic
ALSA lib simple_abst.c:131:(try_open_full) Unable to open library 
'/usr/lib/powerpc-linux-gnu/alsa-lib/smixer/smixer-python.so'
cannot open mixer: No such device or address
