Re: Dropping Alphas for raring cycle

hi Ron,

Just to clear up some confusion (that was mentioned at the session). What
is changing is that the devs and release team do not have to 'freeze' new
stuff for each alpha milestone. This allows them more time to get
'features' in and also makes bug releases during a cadence test time less
stressful than the aching decsion to 're-spin the world' which happened
during the previous milestone releases. They were penciled in for a Friday
release, but frequently we got a milestone to test on Monday / Tuesday with
a cut off day still being a Thursday. This was, in many ways, counter
productive. The -release team were stressed getting a milestone release
ready & the testers (your good selves) were being asked to do a weeks work
in just 2 - 3 days.

What we have with cadence is about the best of both worlds; if not all
tests are carried out during a cadence testing window - it does not affect
the release reaching a 'milestone' which was required during the alpha
cycle.

In terms of 'test times' we do actually increase the number as cadence is
slated in to be every two weeks, but we get a full week to see how things
are getting on. 'Red Bugs' can be fixed and rolled out via the update to
the cadence iso without resetting all tests. The actual working of how this
will be done is still being discussed, but to give a simple example... If
encrypted setup fails and that bug is squashed, the priority for the
testing can move to that with just one test; the other setups simply being
required to ensure that the bug-fix didn't break them. The idea is that
people will be able to see which tests need doing and can tick them off so
as to reduce repetition.

There is, of course, a large elephant in the room who made itself
abundantly known during 12.10 - that of hardware - especially with PPC. For
this reason it has been asked that the PPC guys file their profile[1]. The
setting up of hardware profiles for all testers is a thing that I think
will be tried out during 13.04 testing, the procedure for laptops is
already in place so it is not a 'design from scratch' scenario.

I've cc'd Nicholas and I know he will correct anything that I have gotten
wrong, but that is my understanding of how it will work for 13.04 - no
doubt fine tuning will continue, the new wiki pages that are to be created
will be worth bookmarking as they will hold the latest news on things.

I hope that makes things a little clearer. Guys, please do get involved if
you are unsure about things - Not everything is set in stone and things can
be changed when and where it makes more sense to do things a slightly
different way. In this respect, we really do need your input / views /
opinions on how testing schedules are done.

Regards,

Phill.
