Re: [PPC] USB boot on PowerMac G5

wxl,

The latest:
iMac G3 600 - 4.1.9
This USB boots Raring ISO fine. Using boot usb1/disk@1,2\\yaboot or boot /pci@f2000000/usb@19/disk@1:2,\\yaboot . (On this machine alias usb0 is bottom/lower port, usb1 is top/upper port.)

PowerMac G5 1.6 - 5.1.5 f2
It seems the paths changed in the later G5 firmware. I can see the disk at something like /ht@0,f2000000/pci@4/usb@1,b/disk@1 but haven't figured out a way to get to it. :(

For now, I will work on booting FireWire hard disk. Will be faster for ISO testing purposes anyway and I don't have any DVD-RW handy.

Also after some searching, the "wrong partition error" I mentioned is apparently common and nothing to worry about.

Thanks,
Str8

I need to put this on the wiki but the fact is Open Firmware is buggy and inconsistent. There are some generalities, though. What version is being used on these machines?

Hi,

Anyone have success on this hardware? I know the DD'd usb stick is good
because I can boot it on a G3 iMac via Open Firmware using both the alias
and full OF path. There must be something different in the G5 OF I'm
missing.

Alternatively, If I DD a testing ISO to an SATA hard drive using the same
method for USB, I should be able to boot that via Firewire?

This is a Raring daily I'm testing. Haven't gone back to earlier ISO's to
see if they were any different. I do see an error when booting the G3 that I
don't recall seeing before, but still boots and installs fine. From memory,
something like: "Wrong partition map. Apple_HFS should be ApplePartitionMap"

Thanks,
Str8
