Hi,

The native USB Creator GTK installer in 12.04 works fine so far on a USB stick already
formatted and ready to go. (I have not tested deeper as I am used to format with Gparted)

There is a manual method which is quite easy to use to install to USB stick formatted with
the fat32 file system type, you can read about it here:

One problem with this method in an Ubuntu distribution is that grub legacy does not exist
anymore in Ubuntu repositories. Therefore Grub2 needs to be used instead of Grub legacy,
(or Syslinux) unless the user has a distribution still providing Grub legacy
such as Debian Wheezy or Archlinux (no need to have it booting the partitions, just
installing it in the system is enough).

I don't have enough experience with Grub2 yet to advice anything related to manual
configuration. I will need to test some methods prior.

Another problem is that it's enough for booting to the Desktop but not enough to test all
possible install methods. However there is a howto here which gives me some ideas for
testing another manual install method:

however without using dd. 

If I find out the idea it gives me works, I'll report back.

For people still having Windows in any of their machines, Live Linux USB works fine. It's
a GPL'ed software:

I tried to get it to work in Ubuntu with WINE, but without success.

I am testing it right now.

Drag and drop the ISO image from the PCManFM file manager does not work, however a
copy/paste does work. (It opens a console where the password is prompted).

In the console the keyboard layout is selected, the keyboard variant, and the keyboard
model. Then the content of the ISO file is copyied with an incremental file list (I
already had the install of Lubuntu Saucy from yesterday).

At same time it does install Grub2 (and also updates syslinux). I'll test the result as
soon as it will have finished doing things in it's xterm console.
