Yes that is how everyone has gotten the sources in the past. I believe that
setting up source control would valuable, but can complicate things for
people that are not used to that and in the past we had trouble getting
experienced developers to help. I don't know what the team looks like
anymore since I haven't been involved so it may be time to step things up.

But a cleaner solution is to just download the source archives from the
PPA's web pages:
https://launchpad.net/~mactel-support/+archive/ppa/+packages
Once on that page, you click on the package name, and download the.gzipped
tarball with the source. You can verify it from the dsc also.
