He does have access to the PPA, yes, but has decided not create anything 
for the PPA, but rather submitted the needed patches into the vanilla 
and Ubuntu kernels.

I don't think these are required to get the keyboard backlight working 
on a MBP though. Do you have applesmc loaded? There is also a topic 
linked in the Intel Apple FAQ in the ubuntuforums. Though at first 
glance it appears this was an older version of pommed.
