Well, me too ^^

I mean, in my school computer where the system is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and
firefox 3.6.13, I can upload empty file (or 0kb file) for the same site.

I will try to replicate again in windows seven.

About the 0kb, I don't mind wrinting 0kb or empty, it's the same for me.

  My version of Mahara : 1.3.3
  My version of operating system : Windows Seven
  My version of database : MySQL
  My version of browser : Firefox 3.6.13

  When I upload a empty text file, I can see the upload is in progress
  but it never ends. However, if the text file contains at least one
  character, the upload takes one nanosecond.
