Thanks for tracing through all of that!

I guess since it's only triggered by a single addon, it's pretty much a
bug in that addon, not in Mahara. So I'll mark this bug as "invalid".

  My version of Mahara : 1.3.3
  My version of operating system : Windows Seven
  My version of database : MySQL
  My version of browser : Firefox 3.6.13

  When I upload a empty text file, I can see the upload is in progress
  but it never ends. However, if the text file contains at least one
  character, the upload takes one nanosecond.
