This was pretty much done in 1.3 when the inbox was introduced.

  It would be nice to be able to do more advanced selection:
  
  Select all
  Select all unread
  Select all read
  
  with on this page/on all pages options.
  
  (eg to delete ALL FORUM POSTS!)
