This may be tied to bug 548069. However, it seems like that also newer
accounts, created after the fix was released, on an updated Mahara,
could still have no email address associated with them.

Richard said this might be the case due to how accounts were created,
e.g. if LDAP didn't bring that information along. I think a user should
always have an email address in Mahara. Otherwise, he can't receive
email notifications or changes to his account if he changes institutions
(and auth methods).
