This is probably more of a TinyMCE bug than a Mahara bug...

In earlier versions of Mahara, at least 1.2 and 1.3 I think, the system
asked you whether you wanted to add "http://"; before a link if you
didn't enter the protocol when linking text in a text box. This is not
the case anymore on Master (1.7.0dev) and could lead to broken links
esp. when users type in URLs.

I don't know when or why this feature was taken away, but it was very
useful.
