Since the notifications are marked as read, they don't count towards new
messages in your inbox and thus the number stays at "0".

  Account/activity stays at zero

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  New

Bug description:
  Even though I receive a new message  or there is an activity that
  should trigger a notification, the indicator at the top right corner
  of the interface (account/activity) always stays at zero.

  Version 1.6.2 on Linux Centos 6 with Mysql, this problem is not
  related to browser since it's the same situation with Safari, IE, FF
  and Chrome.
