Thanks for the bug report! Could you please provide some more details?

1. What version of Mahara are you using? (Since you mention "columns or
rows", it sounds like you're probably testing the 1.8rc1?)

2. Are you using Postgres or MySQL?

3. Were there any PHP errors or warnings in your PHP error log when this
occurred? (The location of your PHP error log will depend on your
server's setup; in Ubuntu by default PHP errors get included in the
Apache error log at /var/log/apache2/error.log) If there are any PHP
warnings that occurred at the same time as the "Mahara: Site
Unavailable", please paste the full error stack into a comment here.

4. Alternately, you could add "$cfg->productionmode=false;" to your
Mahara site's config.php to cause PHP warnings to get printed directly
to the browser.

5. What specific steps did you take that led up to the error? Most
importantly, what button or link did you click on before you got the
"Mahara: Site Unavailable" message?

  edit layout option doesn't work

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Every time I try editing the layout to add columns or rows, I get an
  error message pops up saying "Mahara: Site Unavailable"
