The layout can get too crowded and there is no possibility to adjust the
space between blocks.

I think this is a limitation of the current layout as you can only
change certain parameters of the block width in relation to the entire
page width, but not an individual block itself. When we introduced the
rows to the layout of Mahara, we pondered whether to introduce a more
flexible layout, e.g. http://masonry.desandro.com/ but the community
felt it would be too big a change and people still liked to have their
static columns and rows. While Masonry would not have given you more
width between blocks, it would allows for different widths.
