Ah, yes, having a huge number of students in the forum could indeed
cause slowdown when you do a post, especially if you've got your "Post
delay" set to 0. You can check that by going to Administration ->
Extensions -> interaction:forum.

If your Post delay is 0, try setting it to a higher amount. That'll make
it so that the notifications are sent out by the cron instead, and it
should run much faster.

  Forum entry posting hanging during processing

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Adding forum entries to threads seems to be taking a long time to
  commit and is just hanging (does not load to show the newly added
  forum entry in situ). The entries are still successfully posting, a
  browser refresh confirms this and the notification emails go out but
  the page itself is taking over two minutes to load the new comment on
  its own.

  Mahara v1.9.2
  Windows 7
  Browser: Firefox ESR 31.2.0
