I know it's slightly OT, but I think it would make more sense if menus
without text had tooltips, but menus with text didn't. So essentially
the reverse of what we have now. Because, no matter what we do with
those icons, they are never going to accurately describe exactly what
the menu is for without the user having to click to find out and then
remember. I don't mean restoring the overly verbose and cluttered
tooltips of notification icons past, but just what the menu text would
have said if it was a text menu item. Sort of like the alt="" text of
an HTML image. Of course we can do without tooltips on menus
altogether, and we'll get by, but I think done right they add polish.
