im my opinion, indicators should be a compact block of icons on the top
right, leaving the middle part of the top edge free for content or
events related to date-time.

Once consolidated into an iconic system control panel in the top right
corner, they could use a 2 lined design with a unified text field below and
the icons on top, say for unified search or for unified messaging, depending
on what [user]'s preference is..

i'd also suggest to give this indicator display field transparency and
overlay it with individual window content. It can solidify on hover
(opposite of NotifyOSD bubbles) and become clickable
