I completely agree. Since Ubuntu ships with Gnome-panel, it makes sense to adapt the panel for a unity-type feel without compositing. I'm pretty sure DockBarX has a unity theme, so using Gnome-panel on the left and top with DockBarX could be a feasible alternative
