I agree that the main page needs a drastic redesign, it's completely useless in its current state. Hopefully canonical will use the feedback they've received and make something of it.
I've seen a couple of mockups like yours and personally I prefer the more minimalistic approach :) though whatever design they implement is enough for me if it's different from the current.
