Public bug reported:

Selecting a single character in the display causes it to dissapear.
Selecting a second one in the same selection will cause the first one to
re-appear, this time selected.

Selecting one character, letting go, selecting one more will cause two
characters to dissapear. You can continue doing this indefinitely.

Forcing a screen refresh (right-click and left-click, or selecting the
problem area) fixes it.
