St: they do use modules.  I think its more of a packaging issue.  And of course
there's convenience and safety (something _slightly_ more comfortable about
building the whole kernel together if its not too much trouble).

Also for published repos, the PPA system lets them define what gets built and
the servers take care of the rest, so the difference between modules and the
whole kernel is just latency, which is less an issue when you're not in the
middle of dev/debug.

Anyway, I think we're doing a good job of getting support into the main kernel,
so any work put into back porting and augmentation packages has pretty limited
utility.
