This probably isn't it, but just to throw this our there -- is this per 
chance running on virtual machines?

-- the reason I ask -- if you run 2 (or more) virtual servers on the 
same hypervisor you will get bus level data transfer through the virtual 
nics. So sometimes folks see  higher speeds they might not expect 
through virtual nics if they are local to a common hypervisor versus a 
test where the network is in play.
