Starting gxine the ui and splash is showing and it freezes and is eventually killed. See output:

gtkvideo: failed to get a proxy for gnome-screensaver
warning: configuration item media.audio_cd.device points to a non-existent location /dev/cdrom
gxine: killed by watchdog bite
