Yup, with the additional info on submodules, I got the build to work.  It might be useful for future travellers to have a README.md in the project root that explains what commands need to be run to build the charm and particularly in terms of testing it.  You'd have to assume that your private files didn't exist! :)

I've not got the functional test working yet.  i.e. it would be useful for the list of commands or instructions that are needed to build the charm, what test environment is needed, etc.
