Well Damian, that's an interesting problem. Can you try 'rock
-debuglibcache words' and 'rock -debuglibcache words.ooc' and post both
outputs (more specifically the differences in the ar command). 

As for
rock, "manual bootstrapping" is useful when you already have a working
rock but since changes you can't build a newer versions with it. In that
case the manual bootstrapping allows you to upgrade painlessly. It won't
work for a first-time install because many files are missing from it
(sdk, libs, etc.)
