Okay, right, so I'll revise my 'agree' with some conditions.

Effectively today main should be under a checkin freeze; small patches
should go directly into staging, making a main -> staging regular update
unecessary.

Linas's suggestion seems sensible for regular periods with less drastic
changes in the pipeline for staging (or perhaps staging is simply a
transient branch which appears only when necessary to help merge multiple
large project-based development branches)
