Let me give you a short answer, a personal opinion:
- I think that OpenERP must be one of the largest translation projects in the
open source world. It has many-many strings (all business logic is about
terms, messages, reports etc., all translatable ), many languages and most of
them are very technical (not just computer-science, but accounting, business,
marketing, management etc). So, we have a great challenge, a mountain to
climb.
- forming dedicated teams, as Olivier has pointed out, will have the danger
that the teams may not satisfy all members, and end up being closed clubs. The
same, of course, is a great truth about Launchpad (including the code
branches) workflow. On the other hands, groups and hierarchies of workers must
exist, for quality management.
- during the last week, me made a great effort in OpenERP SA to reduce and
cleanup the source strings, so that translators work will make more sense.
- yes, you *can* work with po files. We can sync them both ways with Rosetta.
Lokalize is a recommended tool, just let others waste their time with web-
based ones.
- during my research that I did for Transifex, Pootle etc. I 've found no tool
that would worth migrating to (including the cost of migration, that is).
- yet, as Dr. Gassauer has pointed out, using OpenERP itself[1], with a
special module, to manage translations, could be one of the best options,
rather than Rosetta. But it is not in our immediate plans to develop such a
module, almost no chance to do that before rc2 or even v6.0.0.
* If you have any stray .po files that you need to manipulate or merge with the
ones from MS Rosetta, please don't hesitate to contact me to help you. I've
played quite much with the gettext tools and hope I have valuable know-how to
share with you.
Finally, I hope we keep all working together, to beat this great task.
[1] remember that OpenERP already allows you to translate through the GUI, and
has the unique advantage that you can translate strings in their real context,
inside the forms that they eventually appear.
