We usually try to follow debian-stable in terms of dependencies, as illustrated in the attached picture. We've started to use some 2.7 features in the v8/trunk codebase so there's a good chance v8 will require 2.7.

This may seem quite conservative but in fact we're likely to break support for Red Hat/CentOS out-of-the-box by doing so (RHEL6/CentOS6 have Python 2.6 and PG 8.4 [1][2])
