Re: Enapps update: web-client and server

the reality is that you are
making decisions without consulting the community or at least a close
panel of partners and then later on you realise you make mistakes and
change your mind again and then apologise.
I respect what you have started and I know is not an easy job. At the end
of the day is as you say - open source.
However, we as partners were and are suffering because of these decisions.
We wanted to keep aligned as much as possible to the core model, but then
we saw your focus is not on what we needed.

Hi Fabien,
Thanks for chipping in. I get your points, but the reality is that you are
making decisions without consulting the community or at least a close
panel of partners and then later on you realise you make mistakes and
change your mind again and then apologise.
I respect what you have started and I know is not an easy job. At the end
of the day is as you say - open source.
However, we as partners were and are suffering because of these decisions.

Didnt we want to make these features as modules? Oh yes! We had a web_tabs
module for v 6.1 2 years ago - thats how we started until we realised that
there is so much broken functionality that needs to be fixed at the core
and we didnt have time to go into debating about what is right and what is
wrong when customers were screaming that they just needed the thing to
work!

Sorry we cant make it to the community days next week, I definitely
enjoyed meeting you and your team 3 years ago.
We do not intend to slag off OpenERP/Odoo - we hope these concerns will be
heard and you can change your style of making decisions, so in future we
can re-align (maybe v9 ;) )
And neither do we intend to become another Tryton or another fork. We just
released a web-client+server that we hope will be useful to some that dont
want to keep running after new versions each time.

Regards,

Vadim

Vadim,

There are several wrong messages in your blog about our direction.

Can you update it? Changing a name is a complex operation and I'd like to
avoid misleading people with eroneous communications.

More info bellow:

No, nothing change in our strategic focus. Check the blog about the
announcement:
  https://www.odoo.com/blog/1/post/156#blog-end

We do 82% of our turnover with partners that are mostly targeting mid-size
and big companies. We do also have small companies in the SaaS offer, but
that's not the main focus;

I will not debate if doing the frontend of our existing apps is a good
move or not. The market will answer this question in a few months. (and
you should come to the OpenDays, I will explain why it's critical for an
ERP to integrate the frontend).

But you seems to say that we were busy on doing only that. The
CMS+eCommerce has been built by only 3 persons over one year.
It's a very important feature, but only 5% of our R&D efforts.

We were mostly busy improving existing Apps of Odoo.

That's true. We do a lot of effort in usability. (I would say 50% of our
R&D)

But usability is not about simplifying interfaces. It's about doing what
the users expect to get.

Most of the time, it's not even related to the web client. That's what our
usability team do:
  - having contracts that are real contracts (not analytic accounts),
  - having a purchase flow that matches with buyers real life,
  - having an efficient reconciliation process for bank statements
    instead of complex forms,
  - having the fields the user expect to see in every form,
  - having kanban view to better organise tasks or opportunities funnel,
  - having the reports the manager need at their fingertips,
  - having a clean customer/contact model...

As part of our usability efforts, apart from some small exceptions, we
don't reduce features.

Yes, a lot of partners have to pay the price of a wrong decision I took
5 years ago when we renamed TinyERP to OpenERP. This wrong decision costs
time and money to everyone. Sorry about that.

At that time, I hesitated between Odoo and OpenERP, I purchased both just
in case, and I took the wrong one; OpenERP.

But, as a partner, managing resistance to change is your job, afterall:)

The great thing about open source is that every one is free to do whatever
he wants. If you want to stick to your own version 6.1 fork, that's fine.

Freedom is what makes open source what it is.

But why don't you develop your improvements as community modules, instead
of hacking the core and maintaining a branch that is not compatible with
the official release?

Every time I saw someone doing a fork not compatible with the official
release, this led to high frustrations after a few years. (for partners
and customers) And it often starts with a blog like yours: criticising the
official release to promote your own branch of development.

So, please think about it twice. Check if you can port your customizations
as modules.

The new web client allows to do everything as a module. So, it should be
feasible without too much effort. Your contributions would be much more
valued if they were available as community modules.

Hope I will meet you at the community days,

Thanks,
