I understand you do not want to restrict the product, even though I must admit I do not understand in which kind of cases a product reference can be non-unique. But is there a way to manually restrict it ? If not, is there a way, other than reporting a bug, to request this feature ?

  Product reference not unique

Status in OpenERP Addons (modules):
  Invalid

Bug description:
  1) Steps to reproduce the issue you have observed

  - Create a product (Sales -> Products -> Products -> Create) with a given reference ("42"), save
  - Create a second product with the same reference ("42"), save

  2) The result you observed

  Nothing appens.

  3) The result you expected

  OpenERP would forbid entering two products with the same Reference, or
  at least warns when we do that

  4) The platform you are using

  OpenERP Client Windows
  OpenERP Server Linux

  5) The OpenERP version you are using

  V6.1

  
  There might be other kinds of reference with the uniqueness issue, see for instance bug 692456, solved already.
