Dear DP Hicks,
Maybe the commit message of that line of code may give you a clue about 
why this was changed in the first place; then you could decide if you 
want to make a custom module to work your way around, or file a bug 
report or merge proposal.
If I may, I'll add that Qbzr is pretty good for exploring this way. ie. 
'bzr qannotate xyz.py' shows the code along with the browsable history 
of each line.
