I think that's going to get messy, especially if someone decides to enable both (someone will!). 
Can't we just have a setting for the user to tick whether they are using an old or new LibreOffice?

Is there some form of error we can trap if they have the wrong command line options, and we can then auto-set the 3.4+ setting if this happens?
