Hi,
Thanks for your suggestions.

libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio is installed, version 1.2.13-4ubuntu4
I have added a .jpg to the project, and double clicking on it previewed it
OK. When I double clicked on the .DV file and the .mpeg file, hey both
also played. 

I restarted openshot, clicked on the dv and
pressed play, and it didn't. I then double clicked on the .DV file, and it
did play in the preview window. It looks like I was just unable to use the
UI.
