Have you the version FFmpeg of the medibuntu repository installed on your system ? 
To be sure go to Preferences and 2sd section Format AV and check if you have libx264 installed, if no do it(and use the medibuntu version instead of the official version, it's for legal reasons).

Bug description:
1) Ubuntu 9.10 64bit
2) Installed from PPA
3) Version 1.1.0

All raw material from Sony HD camera in 1920x1080 (MTS files)
Hard to edit but possible
When exporting timeline it gives:

No way to export HD material.
Installed new system clean without any mess
Immediately got same error
Segmentation fault----
Help?
