I have done some  tests yesterday on Marverick and Lucid and i am not able to reproduce them.
Could you give us more explanations ? Hum about the files, used  ...

I have installed the version 0.5.10 of MLT. What is your version ?
sudo apt-cache policy melt

Some video effects appear evil and totally distort the video, slow it down (see screenshot with animated effects and charcoal) with even a single fact the result is identical.
