Re: Going further with Drupal

It's cool, leave it up. I'll just change the CSS. It's minor enough and it looks like a known bug. Good job so far BTW, and thanks for all the work.

The video module seems to create two nodes, one for the video and another for the video's description. However, the description won't be necessary (for now) because the actual video shown will be something produced specifically for the OSDF, and will likely stay up for some time. Any context it needs will be elsewhere on the that static front page.

The featured post that appears can't always just be the newest one (although sometimes we may want it to be). Since the landing page planned is a static front page, it needs to be content we specifically want up there irrespective of the blog/news items. I realize this defies the typical drupal arrangement. Let me know if you'd like me to clarify further.

Right now, the primary track we should be on is modifying this theme's appearance. We want to do something that approaches the one I showed earlier (although it doesn't have to look EXACTLY like that). That layout (header with links on top, split text/media area, split footer) is what was decided upon.

Keep rocking! We're finally getting somewhere.

also the front page (and only the front page) has a featured video section (that could use some CSS edits - but only someone with FTP access can make these), and only the latest published article (along with a pager to see other articles).

we now have support for video objects:

note we are not just using a youtube <embed /> tag in the
free-text portion of an article / blog post / etc. - this is a
dedicated content type with a video field. this gives us
significant power to list and filter content, and to manage the
display of video elements globally. (if we used embed tags, we
would have none of these abilities.)

to add a video, go to 'Add Content' > 'Video'.

        Hello all,

We have Drupal set up with a theme over at
        http://beta.theosdf.org.

Unless there are major objections, this is the base theme
we're going to hack to get what we want. The very first step
here is to get this puppy ready for public consumption. This
        will require specifically 3 things:

          * A front landing page
o will have a space for a featured video
o will host the latest or a featured blog post/article
          * A blog-listing (index) page. This is currently what we see
        as the
            front page.
o until further notice comments will be disabled
          * A regular template for static pages

Number 3 is the simplest one.

Keep in mind that we're taking the minimalist approach with
the look-and-feel of the site. I've attached a quick draft of
the new logo. The accent color is #2eb4fd.

So we don't run into issues, I put the code at
        https://code.launchpad.net/~daimoneze/osdf/drupal7-theme
        <https://code.launchpad.net/%7Edaimoneze/osdf/drupal7-theme>.
We should be using some kind of version control for several
good reasons. I'd prefer bazaar, but I'm open to others if
        people prefer. See
        http://wiki.theosdf.org/index.php?title=Contributing_Code. I
recommend setting up a simple local webserver to help
developing. If you aren't sure how to do this I would be happy
        to help you.

        Happy hacking!

        -Toast
