fortunately, mailchimp is sponsoring the development of a drupal module
for exactly this:

it is ready now, so i'm guessing the difficulty level is 'trivial'.

  As we figure out what to do with our CRM software, I am curious how
  difficult it would be to integrate a simple signup form from MailChimp
  (our current massmailer) in the meantime.
