Public bug reported:

The main menu links have no alt text - if you use a text browser or if
you have images or CSS turned off, they simply don't exist, making
navigation impossible.

I'm happy to fix this myself, and will do unless someone objects. claude
suggested things should be mentioned on the tracker first.
