Public bug reported:

The main menu links are lovely big images, but usability would be a bit
nicer if there was some subtle hover indication for mouseover. This can
be done with a simple CSS selector, that would be neater than image
swaps etc.

I'm happy to fix this myself, and will do unless someone objects. claude
suggested things should be mentioned on the tracker first.
