Adam Reichold proposed the following answer:
Hello,
the most direct way is to just run "qpdfview", e.g. by pressing Alt+F2.
The default application shortcut executes "qpdfview --unique" starting a
unique instance. You can copy that from
"/usr/share/applications/qpdfview.desktop" to
"~/.local/share/applications" in your home directory and change the
"Exec" line so that you will always get a unique instance.
The default launcher also has so-called desktop actions which allow you
to open a new instance or choose a named one, e.g. via the right-click
menu of the application within Unity's launcher.
Best regards, Adam.
