There are reasons to believe that this bug is not in the mptsas driver
but in more general SCSI code. There are reports of USB having similar
issues with ATA pass through commands.

To continue testing I put on kernel 2.6.35.7.12 via PPA (with the stock
3.04.15 from that, not my dkms port.)

sudo aptitude install linux-image-2.6.35-7-server

I am running a system test to exercise I/O now.
