[Bug 631055] [NEW] (bug, and solution!) can't mount drives, restart/shutdown, etc., due to incorrect policykit setting at startup

Public bug reported:

 affects policykit-1-gnome

The problem is that sometimes after booting, I cannot mount things, like
filesystems on the hard disk or flash drives, always receiving a
notification that it is "Not Authorized". Also, I cannot restart or
shutdown the computer (must use sudo reboot) as it just goes to the
login screen.

It was annoying, and I read on forums that many people are having
this issue. I was able to get things working on the next boot if I did:

apt-get install --reinstall policykit

But always the problem would come back at a later boot.

What finally worked for me permanently was going to System > Preferences
>>>> >> > > Startup Applications. Hit "Edit" for "PolicyKit
Authentication Agent" and found the command is for KDE:

/usr/lib/kde4/libexec/polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1

which must be a mistake since I am using GNOME (on 10.04 release). I
changed the command to:

/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1

and things have been working flawlessly since. Why this was the default
setting, I have no idea. But if this setting was in fact the source of
all these problems, please fix in a future release!

James
