Public bug reported:

Slideshow screenlet was set up to a user folder which scanned recursive folders.
Upon new login: nautilus is not recognised as system default file browser, no screenlet is loaded upon startup, unable to right-click on desktop, metacity does not draw windows decoration.
No visible error given.
Only way to fix was to reset all personal config files.
Personal folder used contains 5.6GB of images (and a few videos).
