RaiMan proposed the following answer:
with the current version, images, that are no longer used in the script,
are deleted, when the script is saved (IDE only feature).

You might always delete images, you think you do not need anymore, from the .sikuli folder.
If one of them is still used in the script, in the IDE the filename will be shown in the code (no thumbnail) and the script will crash when it is used for a find op (and this is what would happen if run from command line).
