DEV_NULL confirmed that the question is solved:
Oh I understand it's just images but the game runs in either DirectX or
OpenGL so I thought that might make a big difference.  Nothing in the
game UI changes at all, no glows, absolutely nothing changes that I can
see to cause the problem, when I add the line
setFindFailedResponse(PROMPT) it just tells me which image is causing
the failure but it's a random image each time it fails. I will try
another automation tool if I can't find the answer.
