Why not flags: Because it is a bad practice. In short: Flags represent countries, not languages. I struggled over this myself when, in Austria, some terminal offered various language flag buttons, but not the German one. I did not notice the Austrian flag instead representing ‘German’. I’m really not good in heraldy…! ;-)

No kidding, in other countries, where nationalism is in higher gear a user may even feel offended if it is required to click the flag of the nation militarily occupying his mother country trampling the national pride of his people under foot in history to switch to his native tongue.
