If it was something like:

I had a problem like that myself few days ago.  One of the updates that
wasn't able to complete was for either upstart or initscripts package.

Solution was to use archive.ubuntu.com (instead of rs.archive.ubuntu.com
which was in there for me) in /etc/apt/sources.list and aptitude update
and upgrade again.

Note that it was possible to get into X with an older kernel, but that
just froze in gdm (login screen).
