My final and mostly reliable observation:

BIOS: R4041M3b (VGN-Z41XD) ... Vista update
(http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/updates/index.aspx?l=en_GB&m=VGN-Z41XD_B#)

is compatible only with NVIDIA driver 173, not with latest driver 185.

Driver 185 causes serious troubles during start up at SPEED (NVIDIA)
mode ... blinking monitor and freezing system.

With driver 173 everything works like charm.
