Re : VGN-Zseries-janitor

Thanks a lot for your response. Before using the janitor script, I tried to uninstall the old stuff (even the swicth-to-graphics intit.d script) but I may have forgot some things (like removing cpi_osi="!Windows 2006").

I think I will reinstall my ubuntu from scratch to use ext4. By the way, I have a question about that, are you using NTLDR to dual boot? I read somewhere that sony "watermarks" it's hardware so I use NTLDR as workaround (found that in ubuntu-fr wiki, I use NTLDR to boot on vista or grub) but I don't know if it's really necessary.

> does your upgraded karmic use upstart?
I was thinking that was automatically managed by the karlmic upgrade, so no.

Say it again, but thanks for your script, it's really, really precious (I followed every mails of this list and without your script/site[1] I would be afraid to upgrade karmic). You should link your site from the "Sony Vaio Z-series" launchpad welcome page!

[1]: I didn't saw anything about symbolink links on libGL libs on the manula installation section your site, is it normal? neither about the switch-x-to and by what magics it is launched? It's not really important cause there's the janitor script (you should talk about this script in first position) but when I tried to rollback it's a little bit hard to guess what the script do.

You had to remove the old mechanism prior to upgrade.
Then get a standard Karmic installation that runs.
boot twice without
        acpi_osi="!Windows 2006"
to get the hardware in a state that both cards are visible.
Then you can run the "VGN-Zseries-janitor" script.

Running the script that creates its own solution on top of an other
solution is not a good idea!

Karmic works with Upstart, older Ubuntu's did not yet.:
does your upgraded karmic use upstart?

Ooh... Not a good idea. Did you see any warnings about not installed
nvidea?

missing nvidia libs!

This, of course, can never work:

delete the link /usr/lib/libGL.so.1000 and reinstall
        libgl1-mesa-glx

here the same: missing nvidia libs:

cannot work eather: remove this two files and reinstall:
        xserver-xorg-core

Exactly that you should do again after you removed the unused links like
above described.

>

Because you did not remove the old mechanisms from your old solution.
Specially any init.d scripts which switch between the different cards.

That is stuck. Simply remove them all and the reinstallation will fix
that for the beginning to get a clean system.

You should remove the following files as well:

/etc/init/switch-x-to.conf
/etc/init/nvidia-settings.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf* (yes, all of them)

Remove (until you have installed the nvidia driver):

        acpi_osi="!Windows 2006"

from your grub kernel commandline and try to get a basic karmic running
stable.

Then you can run /usr/bin/jockey-gtk, 'activate' the newest available
nvidia driver and run the "VGN-Zseries-janitor" script again (before you
reboot).

OK. Thank you for that info. I will solve that but first we need you to
get a running system first ;-)

Raphael
