Re: Ubuntu No Longer Boots

Dear A. Hrynkiewicz,

Has you probably are aware. The Vaio Z series is a dual graphic system,
meaning that it actually has one discrete Intel chip and a nvidia chip. The
big problem with this system is that Ubuntu doesn't support this system out
of the box, resulting in both of the graphics chips being in use (powered
on) when you install it. This also means that if you install the nvidia
drivers you will run into trouble because of this situation. If you have
some experience what you can do is simply edit your xorg configuration file
and this will bring you screen back.
Nevertheless, to actually be able to use the switch mechanism you have to do
a completely different thing. There is a solution for the previous versions
of the laptop here: http://global-social.net/sony-VGN-Z#janitor. Although
there are still problems when using both LInux and Windows7, with works
perfectly with windows vista. I wasn't able to find many details of your
model but I think it is still using only the two positions for the switch so
it should work.

If you have problems setting up your xorg configuration file let me know and
I can give you a file configured.

Best,
Bruno
